أأعذِرshall I excuse قلبيmy heart وهْوَwhile it ليto me غيرnot عاذِرٍexcusing
أمor أعصِيI defy غراميmy passion وهوwhile it ماthat which بينbetween أضلعيmy ribs
Shall I excuse my heart, though it does not excuse me?
Shall I excuse my heart though to me it's not excusing
Or shall I defy my passion, though it lies between my ribs?
Or shall I disobey my passion residing in my ribs
ومنand who لِيfor me بصبرٍwith patience أَستزيلُI dispel بهwith it الجوىlove's anguish
وماand not جَلَدِيmy fortitude طوعِيat my command ولاnor كبِدِيmy liver معِيwith me
And who can give me patience with which to dispel love's anguish?
And who can lend me patience to withstand the agony
My fortitude is not at my command, nor is my liver with me.
My endurance is not obedient nor my liver is with me
نَأَوْاthey went far away والأسىand grief عنَّيfrom me بهمfor them غيرnot مُنْتَأٍfar away
وودّعتهمand I bade them farewell والحبُّand love غيرnot مودّعِيbidding me farewell
They went far away, yet grief for them is not far from me.
They went away while anguish did not depart from me
And I bade them farewell, yet love does not bid me farewell.
And I bid them farewell while love did not bid me farewell
فأوّلso the beginning شوقيmy longing كانَwas آخِرَthe end سَلْوتيmy solace
وآخِرُand the end صَبْريmy patience كانَwas أَولَthe beginning أَدْمُعِيmy tears
So the beginning of my longing was the end of my solace,
So my first longing was my last solace
And the end of my patience was the beginning of my tears.
And my last patience was my first tears
