عقلاًreason يُرِيهmakes him see صَوابَهhis sound judgment غيَّاerror
عقلاً يُرِيه صَوابَه غيَّا
Do you not see how drunkenness contends with him
Don't you see how drunkenness wrestles his reason,
for his reason, making him see his sound judgment as error?
Showing him the right way in vain.
كأنّهas though he were والكؤوسand the cups تَحفِزُهspur him on
كأنّه والكؤوس تَحفِزُه
ظبيٌa gazelle رأىsaw خَلْفَهbehind it سَلُوقيّاa Saluki hound
ظبيٌ رأى خَلْفَه سَلُوقيّا
He seems, as the cups spur him on,
As if he and the goblets exciting him
a gazelle that has seen a Saluki behind it.
Were a gazelle who saw hunters behind him.
