ياO دهرُTime كمhow greatly يَشتدgrows fierce حَربُكْyour warfare
يا دهرُ كم يَشتد حَربُكْ
ويَكُرand strikes again بالنكَباتwith misfortunes خَطُبكْyour calamity
ويَكُر بالنكَبات خَطُبكْ
O Time, how fierce your warfare grows!
O Time, how fierce are your battles,
And your calamity strikes again with misfortunes.
And how frequent are your calamities!
ماwhat بالُis the matter with جَورِكyour tyranny لاnot يفُيcomes to its senses (first fragment)
ما بالُ جَورِك لا يفُي
قcompletes 'comes to its senses' ولاand not يَلينsoftens عليtoward me قلبُكyour heart
ق ولا يَلين علي قلبُك
Why does your tyranny not come
Why does not your tyranny cease,
to its senses, and why does your heart not soften toward me?
Nor does your heart soften?
عاصيْتَنىyou have defied me حتىuntil لقدindeed
عاصيْتَنى حتى لقد
أوهمَتنيyou made me imagine أنيthat I أحُبكlove you
أوهمَتني أني أحُبك
You have defied me until, indeed,
You have disobeyed me until indeed
you made me imagine that I love you.
You made me think that I love you.
ياO دهرُTime ماwhat ذنبيmy sin اليtoward (first part of 'toward you')
يا دهرُ ما ذنبي الي
كyou (completing 'toward you') وقدwhile indeed تعاظَمhas grown great فيagainst me ذَنُبكyour sin
ك وقد تعاظَم في ذَنُبك
O Time, what is my sin against
O Time, what is my sin to you,
you, while your sin against me has grown so great?
While my sin has increased in your sin?
بَينيbetween me وبَينكand between you فيconcerning الذيthat which
بَيني وبَينك في الذي
أوليتنيyou have bestowed on me ربيmy Lord وربكand your Lord
أوليتني ربي وربك
Between you and me, concerning what
Between me and you is He whom
you have dealt me, my Lord and yours is judge.
My Lord and your Lord has wronged me.
