ماwhat تقاضَىexacted شوَّالُShawwal مِنfrom رَمَضانِRamadan
Never have the nights of time exacted from us
The nights of time have not demanded from us
what Shawwal has exacted from Ramadan.
What Shawwal demanded from Ramadan

Do you not see its full moon overtaken by sickness,
You do not see its full moon, disease has overcome it
like a lover's sickness in separation?
Like the sickness of a lover in estrangement

Fear of Shawwal eclipsed its light,
Its light has been veiled in fear of crescent
as fasting dims complexions.
Like the fasting's veil from colors
فَعَلتْit acted فيin اخترامِهcutting its life short وضَناهand its wasting away
فِعلَهits effect فيupon النُّفوسِsouls والأَبدانِand bodies
It cut short its life and wasted it away,
It has done in its reverence and modesty
as fasting does to souls and bodies.
What it has done in souls and bodies

So abasement appeared in it when there had passed
So it appeared in it humiliation when
twenty full days of it, and eight more.
Twenty full moons and eight turned away from it

and revelry, in the finest of seasons!
Under the best of times

When the breeze grew sweet and summer's heat had passed,
When the breeze was good and the heat receded
and blossoms of varied hues were touched with dew.
And the flowers of colors lengthened

And the foreign birds sang in the branches
joyful in every utterance.
Happy with every expression

Do you not see how Eid al-Fitr has come, rising high,
You do not see Eid, how it came exalted
its beauty manifest, its authority exalted,
Apparent beauty, towering sultan

welcoming al-ʿAziz with good fortune and prosperity,
Receiving the dear with happiness and welcome
victory, eminence, and security?
And opening and elevation and safety

رُcompletion of 'bird-augury' وطَرْقُand striking الحصاpebbles وفأْلُand the favorable omen of اللِّسانِspeech
The birds and bird-augury brought us glad tidings of that,
The birds and trees and pebbles of granite and eloquence of the tongue gave us good tidings of that
as did pebble-divination and favorable omens in speech.
Oh Imam of guidance whom loving is a duty upon us like the duty of faith

O Imam of guidance, love for whom is an obligation
May God increase you in vastness and elevation
upon us, like the duty of faith:
And power over the people of disobedience
زادكmay He increase you اللهGod بَسْطةًmight وعُلوّاًand eminence
واقتِداراًand mastery علىover ذَويthose given to العِصيانِrebellion
may God increase your might and eminence,
You are the light of people in justice and virtue
and your mastery over the rebellious.
And the right hand of guidance and the eye of time
أنتyou نورُthe light of الأنامhumankind عَدْلاًin justice وفَضْلاًand bounty
ويمينُand the right hand of الهدىguidance وعَيْنُand the eye of الزمانِtime
You are the light of humankind in justice and bounty,
And the brother of elevation which God gave good tidings of
and the right hand of guidance and the eye of time,
In the recitation of the Quran
وشقِيقُand the brother of العُلاeminence الَّذيwhom بَشَّرgave glad tidings اللّGod (first part)

هُcompletion of 'God' بِهof him فيin تِلاوةِthe recitation of القرآنِthe Qur'an
and the brother of eminence, of whom God gave glad tidings
You have a palm that competes with rain in generosity
in the recitation of the Qur'an.
And a forehead that is like the two moons

Yours is a hand that vies with rain in generosity,
And features sweet in taste and scent
and a brow as though it were the sun and moon,
Resembling the concealment of secrets with declaration

and traits like honey in taste and when tested,
I am from some of the beauty you were adorned with
the same in private as in public.
With kinds of beauty and beneficence
أَناI مِنamong بعضِsome of ماwhat تأَنقْتَyou took pains فِيهover it
بضُروبِthrough forms of الجميلِkindness والإحسانِand beneficence
I am among those on whom you have lavished care
I have not ceased to be with you between righteousness and nearness
through many forms of kindness and beneficence.
Hands that are seen without ingratitude
لمnot أَزلI have ceased منكَfrom you بينamid بِرٍّkindness وقُرْبٍand closeness
أَيادٍfavors تَتْرَىcome in succession بِغَيرِwithout امتِنانِreminders of indebtedness
I have always remained amid your kindness and closeness,
So if I try to repay you with praise
favors in succession, without reminders of indebtedness.
And with gratitude every tongue of mine falls short
فإذاso whenever رمتُI seek أَنto أَكافِيكَrepay you بالمَدْwith praise (first part)

حِcompletion of 'praise' وبالشّكرand with thanks كلَّfalters عنكَin speaking of you لِسانيmy tongue
So whenever I seek to repay you with praise
and thanks, my tongue fails to do you justice.
