فالأُفقُ من بعدك مُسْوَدّ

You departed as dawn departs with its light,

so the horizon is dark after your departure.

كأنّني بعدَك مستأسِرٌ

ليس له قَبْلٌ ولا بَعْدُ

ليس له قَبْلٌ ولا بَعْدُ

In your absence, I am like a captive

with neither a past nor a future.

بُعْدُك موت صَبِرٌ طعمُه

وقربُك الماذِيّ والشهد

وقربُك الماذِيّ والشهد

Your absence is death, its taste bitter aloes,

and your nearness is white honey and honeycomb.
