إنيindeed, I غريمٌa creditor والغريمُand the creditor مطالِبٌone demanding his due
كانis المُداينُthe debtor موسِراًsolvent أوor معسِراinsolvent
Indeed, I am a creditor, and a creditor demands his due,
I am a debtor, and the debtor is bound,
whether the debtor is solvent or insolvent.
Whether the creditor was once rich or poor.
ياO سيِّديmy lord أدعوكI call upon you دعوَةَa call مُذْكِرٍone who reminds
مِنof وعدهhis promise ماwhat خافhe feared ألاthat not يذكراbe remembered
My lord, I call upon you as one who reminds
O my lord, I call you with a reminder's plea,
of what he fears may go unremembered in his promise.
Never did he fear to be forgotten.
شِعْرpoetry كأنّas though جميعall ألبابminds الورىhumankind
جُمِعتْwere gathered عليهupon it فقصرناso our utmost أنto يُشْهَراbe made known
Verse as though all the minds of humankind
Poetry whose eloquence seems as if
were gathered upon it; so our utmost is to make it known.
All the doors of intellect were assembled upon it, yet we fell short in making it famous.
لفظdiction كأنّas though الغانياتِthe beautiful women لفَظْنهthey uttered it
فنظمنthen they strung منهfrom it فيin القلائدthe necklaces جوهراjewels
Diction as though beautiful women had uttered it,
A diction whose articulation is as if
then strung jewels from it into necklaces.
The singing girls composed strands of pearls from it.
هوit أوّلٌforemost فيin حسنهits beauty وكمالِهand its perfection
وارىand I see جميعَall الشعرpoetry بعدكbehind you آخِراlast
It is foremost in its beauty and perfection,
It is unmatched in its elegance and perfection,
and I see all poetry coming last behind you.
And I see all other poetry after you as inferior.
كتباينlike the contrast الليلينthe two nights ليلٍa night مظلمٍdark
وَحْشٍdesolate وليلٍand a night قدalready أتاناhas come to us مقمِراmoonlit
Like the contrast between two nights: one dark,
As the difference between two nights, a dark night
desolate, and one that has come to us moonlit.
Of solitude, and a night brightened by the rising moon.
هوit روضةa garden أُنُفٌfresh and untouched تفيدكoffers you أخضراgreen
طَوْراًat times وطَوْراًand at times أحمراred أوor أصفراyellow
It is a fresh, untouched garden, offering you green
It is a garden whose flowers provide you with green,
at times, and at times red or yellow.
At times red or yellow.
ومودّةand affection مثلlike الأمانيwishes لذّةًin delightfulness
لوif أدركتْit were perceived بالشمّby smell كانتit would be عنبراambergris
And affection as delightful as wishes:
And affection whose bliss, if attained
if perceived by smell, it would be ambergris.
Through perception, would be ambergris.
أوليتهاyou endowed it ندّاًblended perfume وعوداًand aloeswood مثلlike ماthat
حُزْتَyou attained الفضائلَthe virtues منظراًin outward appearance أوor مخبراin inner character
You endowed it with blended perfume and aloeswood, just as
I wished it generosity and promises like what
you attained virtues in outward appearance or inner character.
You have reaped of merits, sights or reports.
وكذاكand likewise منwhoever يَكُنis العزيزُal-Aziz أَخاًa brother لهto him
يَأْوِيtakes refuge إلىto جبلٍa mountain مِنيعimpregnable أوعراvery rugged
And so, whoever has al-Aziz as his brother
And likewise, he who has the dear one as a brother
takes refuge in an impregnable, rugged mountain.
Seeks refuge on a lofty, rugged mountain.
صلّىmay bless عليهupon him اللهGod ماas long as امتدّstretches on الدجىthe darkness
ورأتand saw عيونُeyes الناسof people صبحاًa dawn أنوراradiant
May God bless him as long as darkness stretches on
May God send blessings upon him as long as the darkness stretches
and people's eyes behold a radiant dawn.
And the eyes of people see the dawn illuminated.
لاdo not تَنْسَforget ماwhat أسلفتهyou offered it before إنيindeed, I امرؤٌa man
وَقْفٌdevoted علىto شُكْرِيكَthanking you حتىuntil المحشراthe Day of Gathering
Do not forget what you offered before; indeed, I am a man
Do not forget what I owe you, I am a man
devoted to thanking you until the Day of Gathering.
Who stands steadfast upon repaying your favors until the day of resurrection.
إنيindeed, I أخافُI fear إذاif تركتَyou abandon تَغاضياًthrough neglect
عاداتِthe customary ways مثلِكَof one like you أنthat أكونI shall be مقصراremiss
Indeed, I fear—if, through neglect, you abandon
I fear that if you neglect heedfulness
the ways of one like you—that I shall fall short.
Of your like’s customs, I would be remiss.
