إذا لم تعرِفِ الخيرا

فتأتيه ولا الشرّا

If you do not recognize good

If you know not good, to do it or stay

so as to do it, nor evil,

Nor evil, to shun it on your way

ولم تقصِد بأفعالِ

ولم تقصِد بأفعالِ

ك لا نفعاً ولا ضرّا

ك لا نفعاً ولا ضرّا

and through your actions you intend

If your acts bring no gain or any loss

neither benefit nor harm,

Swaying not right or leaning left across

ولم يعدِلْ بك التمي

ولم يعدِلْ بك التمي

يُز لا يُمْنَى ولا يُسْرَى

يُز لا يُمْنَى ولا يُسْرَى

and discernment does not steer you

Then like water that flows but has no will

either rightward or leftward,

Or sword that does not sword-work fulfill

فأنت الماءُ لا يعدو

فأنت الماءُ لا يعدو

به تيّارُه المجرى

به تيّارُه المجرى

then you are water, never carried

No right have you men's blame or praise to claim

beyond its channel by its current;

Yet you in your ignorance bear the shame

وأنت السيفُ لا يَفْرِي

وأنت السيفُ لا يَفْرِي

إذا ما لم به يُفْرَا

إذا ما لم به يُفْرَا

and you are a sword that does not cut

Like one who eats what harms his stomach sore

unless it is used to cut.

Or drunk who knows not what in drink he bore

فما حقُّك أن تسم

فما حقُّك أن تسم

عَ لا ذمّاً ولا شكرا

عَ لا ذمّاً ولا شكرا

So you have no right to hear

Who reaps no fruit of work, who reads no lore

either blame or thanks.

Named generous but wasteful evermore

ولكن أنت في جَهْلِ

ولكن أنت في جَهْلِ

كَ كالآكِل ما يَخْرا

كَ كالآكِل ما يَخْرا

But you, in your ignorance,

Why give thous then, not knowing the tenth part

are like one who eats what he shits,

Why honor the slave not knowing free heart?

وكالسكرانِ لا يَدْري

وكالسكرانِ لا يَدْري

بما يَفْعله سُكْرا

بما يَفْعله سُكْرا

and like a drunk who does not know

They said, his worth is the worth he deems

what he does in his drunkenness,

And who knows not hardship what succor seems?

وكالتارك ما يَجني

وكالتارك ما يَجني

وكالجاهل ما يَقْرا

وكالجاهل ما يَقْرا

and like one who abandons what he reaps,

No length of days nor life, my Lord, decree

and like one ignorant of what he reads.

For what more proper, grave, than death for thee?

وقد سَمَّاك أقوام

وقد سَمَّاك أقوام

جواداً ما جداً غَمْرا

جواداً ما جداً غَمْرا

And some people have called you

generous, noble, munificent.

ولِمْ لا تَهَبُ الأَلْفَ

ولِمْ لا تَهَبُ الأَلْفَ

إذا لم تَدْرِ ما العَشْرا

إذا لم تَدْرِ ما العَشْرا

And why would you not give a thousand

if you do not know what ten is?

ولِمْ لا تُكرِم العبدَ

ولِمْ لا تُكرِم العبدَ

إذا لم تعرفِ الحُرَّا

إذا لم تعرفِ الحُرَّا

And why would you not honor a slave

if you do not recognize a free man?

وقالوا ليس قدرُ الما

وقالوا ليس قدرُ الما

لِ في هِمَّتِهِ قدرا

لِ في هِمَّتِهِ قدرا

And they said: the value of wealth

counts for nothing in his ambition.

وهل يعرف ما الإيسا

وهل يعرف ما الإيسا

ر من لا يعرِف العسرا

ر من لا يعرِف العسرا

And can one know what affluence is

who does not know poverty?

فلا أبقى لك اللهُ

فلا أبقى لك اللهُ

بقاءً لا ولا عُمْرا

بقاءً لا ولا عُمْرا

So may God leave you

no continued life—no, nor any lifespan!

فما اَوْلَى بك الموتَ

فما اَوْلَى بك الموتَ

وما أَوْلَى بك القَبْرا

وما أَوْلَى بك القَبْرا

How much more fitting death is for you,

and how much more fitting the grave is for you!
