إذا الدهرُ أعطاك القِياد مملَّكاً

إذا الدهرُ أعطاك القِياد مملَّكاً

ودارت بما ترجو عليك سعودُهُ

ودارت بما ترجو عليك سعودُهُ

If Time gives you the reins, making you sovereign,

If Fortune gives you power to rule as king,

And its good fortunes turn your way with what you hope for,

With all you wish of bounty circling you,

فلا تَعْمَ فيه عينُ قلبِك حَيْرةً

فلا تَعْمَ فيه عينُ قلبِك حَيْرةً

وخُذْ وأَفِد من كلّ ما تستفيدهُ

وخُذْ وأَفِد من كلّ ما تستفيدهُ

Then let not bewilderment blind your heart's eye amid it;

Let not your heart be blinded by elation-

And take, and give from everything you gain.

Take all you can, but temper greed with wisdom true.

يموت الفتى طِفْلاً وكهلاً وعَبْطة

يموت الفتى طِفْلاً وكهلاً وعَبْطة

ويَبقَى على الأيام والدهر جودُهُ

ويَبقَى على الأيام والدهر جودُهُ

A man dies in childhood, in maturity, or suddenly in full health,

Man dies an infant, dodderer, or young lion,

And his generosity endures through the days and time.

Yet his good deeds live on beyond his little span.

فكن لجميع الناس فيه مشارِكاً

فكن لجميع الناس فيه مشارِكاً

فعمّا قليلٍ سوف تصحو رُعوده

فعمّا قليلٍ سوف تصحو رُعوده

So share it with all people,

So share with all men freely of your bounty,

For soon its thunderclaps will subside.

For soon life's thunder will be mute and wisdom wan.

ولا تتكّبر إنّ قَدْرك فوق ما

ولا تتكّبر إنّ قَدْرك فوق ما

ملكتَ وإنّ الكِبر ما لا يزيده

ملكتَ وإنّ الكِبر ما لا يزيده

And do not be arrogant: your worth stands above what

Though fortune raises you high above the rest,

You possess, and arrogance does not increase it.

Yet arrogance will bring you naught but loss.

وزِدْ لعطاء الله ذُلَّ تواضع

وزِدْ لعطاء الله ذُلَّ تواضع

فإنك والأقوامَ طرّاً عبيده

فإنك والأقوامَ طرّاً عبيده

And for God's bounty, grow in humble submission,

Bow down in deepest humility to Allah-

For you and all peoples are His servants.

You and all men are equal before God, your Master.
