If I have a disdainful heart and an ambition
If I have a reluctant heart and ambition
That Yadhbul and Thabir fall short of,
That falls short of it, it withers and fades,
ولمand did not ترضَconsent نفسيmy soul أنto تذِلّabase itself وتختذيand submit
لغيركto anyone but you إذsince لاnot مَنanyone سواكbesides you كثيرof consequence
And my soul has not consented to abase itself and submit
And my soul was not content to be humiliated and take shelter
To anyone but you, for no one else is of consequence,
With anyone other than you, for there is no one like you abundantly,
فماso what بالcondition وعديthe promise to me لمnot يتمَّbe fulfilled ومالهand what ails it
تلوحappears عليهupon it كَأْبَةٌgloom وفتورand languor
Why, then, has the promise to me not been fulfilled, and why
So why has my promise not been fulfilled and what ails it?
Do gloom and languor show upon it?
On it looms disdain and indifference,

وشهرٌand a month رهينheld hostage to الانتظارwaiting شهورmonths
I waited patiently for it a month, hoping for its fulfillment;
I waited for it a month hoping for its fulfillment,
And a month held hostage to waiting is many months.
And a month remains hostage to waiting for months,
أيرجِعَwill he return? منone who يرجوكhopes in you للدّهرbefore Time صاغراًhumbled
وأنتwhile you علىover كلّall الأمورaffairs قديرpowerful
Will one who hopes in you return humbled before Time,
Will one who hopes in you return humiliated for eternity?
While you have power over all affairs?
While you are capable of all matters,
وكيفand how يخِيبis disappointed المرتجِيone who hopes منكfrom you نائلاًa gift
وطائرهand his bird بالسعدwith good fortune ظَلَّhas continued يطيرُflies
And how can one hoping for a gift from you be disappointed,
And how can one hoping in you be disappointed while attaining?
While his bird has kept flying with good fortune?
His good fortune's bird continued flying,
أأجزعshould I lose heart? منat صَرْفthe turns الزمانTime ورَيْبهand its calamities
وأنتwhile you علىover صرفthe turns الزمانTime أميرa ruler
Should I lose heart at the turns of Time and its calamities,
Should I despair of the vicissitudes of fate and its harm
While you are ruler over the turns of Time?
While you control the vicissitudes of fate?
وإنيand indeed I وإنand even if لمnot أُعطَam given حظّاًgood fortune لَعالِمٌsurely learned
جَليدsteadfast علىunder كرِّrepeated assaults الخطوبcalamities صَبُورُpatient
And I, even if granted no good fortune, am indeed learned,
And even if I am not given a share, I am aware
Steadfast under calamities' repeated assaults, patient.
Composed in the face of adversities, patient,
إذاif لمnot أكنْI am نِكْساًa base man جَهْولاًdeeply ignorant فَهَيِّنٌthen of little account
عَلَيّto me بُؤُوسٌmisery نالنيbefell me وحَبُورُand joy
If I am no base, ignorant man, then of little account
If I am not dejected and ignorant, it is easy
To me are the misery that befalls me and joy.
For me to bear misfortunes that befell me and calamities,
وماand not زلتُI have ceased أَسموI aspire للغنيto wealth بكthrough you والعُلاand high rank
ومثليand one like me بماof what يَسموhe aspires إليهto it جَدِيرworthy
And I have always aspired to wealth through you and high rank,
And I still aspire to your richness and sublimity
And one like me is worthy of what he aspires to.
And one like me aspires to what he aspires,
فياso, oh ليتَif only شِعْرِيmy knowledge ماwhat الّذيthat which فيكin you عَاقنيheld me back
وأنتwhile you عليمٌdeeply knowledgeable بالرجالabout men بصيرdiscerning
So, would that I knew what in you has held me back,
Oh, I wish I knew what prevented me from you
While you know men well and are discerning.
While you are all-knowing of men, seeing,
قضاؤكyour judgment حقّjust فاقضِso decree ماwhat شئتَyou wish إننيindeed I

علىfor كلّall ماthat تَقضِيyou decree الغداةَin the morning شَكورdeeply grateful

Your judgment is just; decree what you will, for I
Your decree is truth, so decree what you will, I am
Am grateful for all you decree in the morning.
Thankful for all that you decree in the morning,
