If glances are the messengers of hearts
If glances are messengers of hearts,
among us, how trifling the watcher's scheming!
Then how trivial is the schemer’s ploy;
قّبلتُI kissed منthe one whom أَهْوىI love بعينيwith my eye ولمand did not

يشعر بتقبيليَ خَدُّ الحبيبْ
I kissed the one I love with my eye, and
I kissed with my eyes whom I desire,
the beloved's cheek did not feel my kiss.
Yet my beloved felt not my kiss’ joy,

But his eye had indeed become aware
But his eye detected in stealth
of my eye's secret, with the discernment of one who suspects.
My eye’s secret, like a spy;
إنif كانwas علمُknowledge الغيبthe unseen مُسْتَخْفياًhidden
إن كان علمُ الغيب مُسْتَخْفياً

If knowledge of the unseen is hidden
If knowledge of the unseen is hid
from us, then in a glance lies knowledge of unseen things.
From us, in a glance knowledge comes clear.
