شكرتI gave thanks ليومِto the day of النوىparting جودَهits generosity
عليّtoward me بمنthrough the one who شفَّنيwore me thin صدُّهُhis rejection
I thanked the day of parting for its generosity
I thanked his generosity for a friendly day
To me through him whose rejection had worn me thin.
That healed me with a visitor whose friendship took my pain away
جعلتI made التوادُعَbidding farewell ليfor myself عِلَّةًa pretext
وأمكننيand was within my reach عندهduring it خدّهhis cheek
I made farewell my pretext,
I made my farewells an excuse to see his face again
And during it his cheek was within my reach.
And let me kiss his cheek though departure was ordained
فأودعتُso I placed وَجْنَتَهُhis cheek قُبْلةًa kiss
شفَتْhealed مُهْجَةًa heart شفّهاwore it thin بُعْدُهhis absence
So I placed a kiss upon his cheek,
So I could kiss his rosy cheek before we went our ways
Which healed a heart his absence had worn thin.
That burning kiss unleashed the tears that poured down from his eyes
كأنّas though دموعيmy tears علىupon وجههhis face

As though my tears upon his face
As though my tears upon his cheek were strung in flowery bands
Were a strand of pearls whose string had come loose.
Like raindrops in a jasmine necklace strung upon his face
