عمرتُ المغاني واجتنبت النواويسا

عمرتُ المغاني واجتنبت النواويسا

وساعدت في الدير القصيرِيّ إبليسا

وساعدت في الدير القصيرِيّ إبليسا

I inhabited the dwellings and shunned the tombs.

I have enjoyed songs and avoided flutes,

And I aided Iblis in al-Qusayri Monastery.

And helped the short monastery's devil,

وهل يهجر اللذاتِ إلا مسوِّفٌ

وهل يهجر اللذاتِ إلا مسوِّفٌ

ويتركها إلا امرؤ بات منحوسا

ويتركها إلا امرؤ بات منحوسا

And who forsakes pleasures but a procrastinator?

And who would abandon pleasures except a procrastinator,

And who abandons them but a man who spent the night ill-starred?

Or leave them except a man who became unlucky.

رُبَّ عظَّمتهن النصارى ولم أزل

رُبَّ عظَّمتهن النصارى ولم أزل

أعرّس باللذات فيهنّ تعرِيسا

أعرّس باللذات فيهنّ تعرِيسا

Many did the Christians revere, and I never ceased

How often the Christians magnified them yet I did not stop

To rest within them amid pleasures, taking my night's repose.

Wedding pleasures to them as a wedding,

أصولُ بقرعِ البمّ والزيرِ بعده

أصولُ بقرعِ البمّ والزيرِ بعده

إذا قرعوا عند الصلاة النواقيسا

إذا قرعوا عند الصلاة النواقيسا

I charge forth by striking the bass string, then the treble,

I begin with the tapping of copper and bells after it,

When they ring the bells at prayer time.

When they ring at prayer the bells.

وإن عظَّمت فيه النصارى صليبَهم

وإن عظَّمت فيه النصارى صليبَهم

وحرّكتِ الناقوس أو عبدت عيسى

وحرّكتِ الناقوس أو عبدت عيسى

And if the Christians there revered their cross,

And if the Christians magnify their cross in it,

And rang the bell or worshipped Jesus,

And the bell is stirred or Jesus is worshipped,

فزِعت إلى دين النبِيّ محمدٍ

فزِعت إلى دين النبِيّ محمدٍ

وقدّست فيه رب أحمد تقديسا

وقدّست فيه رب أحمد تقديسا

I sought refuge in the faith of the Prophet Muhammad,

I am alarmed to the religion of Prophet Muhammad,

And there I hallowed the Lord of Ahmad, declaring Him holy.

And sanctified in it the Lord of Ahmed as sacred.
