كمhow often حَنَّhe yearned شوقاًwith longing وَأنَّاand moaned
وَلمand did not يَنَلْattain ماwhat تَمَنَّىhe wished for
How often he yearned with longing and moaned,
How long have I yearned in vain
And did not attain what he wished for.
Yet my wish remains unattained
ياO منyou who إذاwhen سِيلَis asked for وَصْلاًunion
أوor سِيمَis entreated for عَطْفاًtenderness تَجَنَّىinvents grievances
O you who, when asked for union,
O you who, when affection flows
Or entreated for tenderness, invent grievances—
Or kindness gently warmer grows
إنif كنتَyou were أعرضتَyou turned away لمَّاwhen
مَلَكتَyou possessed دَلاًّcoquetry وَحُسْناand beauty
If you turned away when
Turns coldly away from what was won
You possessed coquetry and beauty,
Of charm and beauty, being gone
فكيفthen how عَلَّمتَyou taught عَيْنَيْtwo eyes
كَyour قتلَkilling هذاthis المُعَنَّىthe tormented one
Then how did you teach those eyes
How could you teach these eyes of mine
Of yours to kill this tormented one?
Such cruel slaying of design
