وراحٍand evening visits علىfor الصّباyouthful pleasure والعُقارِand wine
How many early-morning visits I have made to the monastery of al-Qusayr,
How many a short night have I spent
And evening visits, for youthful pleasure and wine!
Strolling with the breeze and perfume
حيثwhere أخلواI am alone بماwith what أُحِبّI love منof القَصْrevelry (word begins here)
ف(completes 'revelry') قليلَhaving little الوقارِdecorum لستُI am not أُداريI dissemble
Where I am alone with the revelry I love,
Where we were alone with the stories I love
With little decorum, making no pretense.
Though not very dignified, I continued on
كمHow many صبوحٍa morning draught شَدَدْتهI joined it بغَبوقٍto an evening draught
وظلامٍand darkness وصلتُهI joined it بنهارِto daylight
How many a morning draught I have joined to an evening draught,
How many dawns have I hastened
And darkness I have joined to daylight!
With darkness and gloom, reaching daybreak
إنماnothing but العيشُlife أنto تروحَyou go forth عِشياًat evening
قاصفاًreveling عازِفاًplaying music خليعَhaving cast off العذارِthe bridle
Life is nothing but going forth at evening,
For life is but to wander one evening
Reveling, playing music, with the bridle cast off.
Joyfully singing, shameless and bare
