والأَسَىand grief جائِلٌswirling مكانَin place of الرِّيقِsaliva
والأَسَى جائِلٌ مكانَ الرِّيقِ
How can I find solace while my tears have not sobered,
How can I be consoled when tears fail to awaken,
and grief swirls in place of saliva?
And sorrow takes the place of calmness within me,
وسقانيand made me drink اجتماعُناour gathering بِرُباon the hills of البِرthe pool (word continues)
وسقاني اجتماعُنا بِرُبا البِر

كَةِ فقد الصِّبا وفَقْدَ الرِّحيقِ
And our gathering on the hills by the pool made me drink
Our parting has left me savoring but sorrow's wine,
the loss of youth and the loss of pure wine.
Having lost the springtime of my life and its joy.

حكمت بالبِعاد والتفريق
Nights gave us al-Sham in its stead,
Our nights together in Damascus changed for me,
decreeing estrangement and separation.
To Judgment and separation at your decree.

O my days in Egypt, return to me now,

Between the Gulf's head and my beloved home,

Where the morning breeze blows perfume through the meadows,
their musk in the heights of the gentle breeze.
Its gentle breath so soft and meek.
