بادِرْhasten فإنّfor indeed الصِّباyouth جِنَانُgardens; paradises
وللصِّباand youth has أوجُهٌfaces حِسانُbeautiful
Hasten, for youth is gardens of paradise,
Hurry, for youth is an orchard
And youth has beautiful faces.
Of beautiful, blossoming trees,
وللصَّباand the east wind has فيupon الرُّباthe hills نِسيمٌa breeze
كأنّهas though it were عنبرٌambergris وبانُand the ben tree
And the east wind has a breeze upon the hills,
And youth has a gentle breeze
As though it were ambergris and ben-tree fragrance.
Sweet as ambergris.
وبينناand between us جدوَلٌa brook لِطيفٌgentle; lovely
كأنّas though أمواجَهits waves جُمانpearls
And between us is a gentle brook,
Between us flows a slender stream
As though its waves were pearls.
Whose little waves seem pearls.
ماnot قالsaid عبدُservant of الإلهGod حَقّاًtruly
إلاّexcept مَقالاًa saying هوit البَيانُeloquence
Truly, Abd al-Ilah said nothing
What servant of God has said
But a saying that is eloquence itself:
More truth than words can tell?
بادِرْhasten فإنّfor indeed الزمانtime غِرٌّunwary; naive
منfrom قِبِلbefore أنْthat يَفْطِنtakes notice الزّمانtime
Hasten, for time is unwary,
Hurry, for time is a haughty king
Before time takes notice.
Who will not wait for the wise to heed him.
