زمانٌ كريعان الشبيبة ناضرُ

وعيَش كما آب الحبيب المسافر

A time as fresh as the bloom of youth,

and a life like the homecoming of the beloved traveler,

تقضّي بما فيه وأُعقِب بعده

تقضّي بما فيه وأُعقِب بعده

زمان بأنواع المكاره ماطِر

زمان بأنواع المكاره ماطِر

passed away with all they held, and were followed by

a time raining down every kind of hardship.

ومن لؤمه أن فاز فيه أصاغرٌ

ومن لؤمه أن فاز فيه أصاغرٌ

بنَيل معاليه ومات الأكابرُ

بنَيل معاليه ومات الأكابرُ

And part of its baseness is that petty men succeeded in it

in attaining its highest honors, while the great men died.

كأن نصيب الحُرّ منه مغَّيبٌ

كأن نصيب الحُرّ منه مغَّيبٌ

وحظَّ الوضيع الساقِط النذل حاضر

وحظَّ الوضيع الساقِط النذل حاضر

As though the noble man's share of it were hidden away,

while the lot of the lowly, debased scoundrel were at hand.
