O you whose kisses are sweet, is there for a sorrowful

ardent lover a way to win a meeting with you?

The heart complains to you of its anguish,

and the eye laments the loss of seeing you.

A burning anguish from you is in me; nothing quenches it

save the nectar of saliva from your front teeth.

So grant him whose soul you have slain

a gift, a boon in return for that.

Or send, from the nectar of your saliva, what

will quench my burning thirst, on the tip of a tooth-stick.

And had you feared God, your eyes would not have slain

the son of the Prophet's legatee.

    I acquired a slave-girl, and now

my slave-girl has become one of my masters.

My sickbed visitor's words delight my ear

as she asks her, 'Tell me, how is your master?'

If she gives off fragrance, you say, 'Musk from a musk-pod!'

Or if she unveils, you say, 'A full moon of the heavens!'

It is as though her gaze, when she glances,

were, like me, languishing with love and lamenting.
