حَيّsalute شَرْباًa company of drinkers تَفَرّدواthey distinguished themselves بالرّحِيقwith pure wine
حَيّ شَرْباً تَفَرّدوا بالرّحِيق
ونفوساًand souls حَنَّتْyearned إلىfor المعشوقthe beloved
ونفوساً حَنَّتْ إلى المعشوق
Salute a company of drinkers distinguished by pure wine,
and souls that yearned for the beloved.
كلَّماwhenever دارتِcirculated المدامُthe wine عليهمْamong them
كلَّما دارتِ المدامُ عليهمْ
سَلَكواthey followed لِلعلومto the sciences كُلَّevery طَريقpath
سَلَكوا لِلعلوم كُلَّ طَريق
Whenever the wine was passed around among them,
they followed every path to knowledge.
وتعاطَواand they exchanged علىover الكؤوسِthe cups حديثاًdiscourse
وتعاطَوا على الكؤوسِ حديثاً
مُحْكَمَprecise النَّصّthe wording مُؤْنِقَdelightful التّنْمِيقِthe embellishment
مُحْكَمَ النَّصّ مُؤْنِقَ التّنْمِيقِ
And over the cups they exchanged discourse,
precise in wording, delightful in embellishment.
سَبَقُواthey outstripped كُلَّevery سابِقٍcontender للمعاليfor lofty honors
سَبَقُوا كُلَّ سابِقٍ للمعالي
واستدلّواand they reasoned بكلwith every فَهْمٍunderstanding دقيقsubtle
واستدلّوا بكل فَهْمٍ دقيق
They outstripped every contender for lofty honors,
and reasoned with every subtle insight.
