أما ترى حركاتِ الريح مُخْبِرةً

أما ترى حركاتِ الريح مُخْبِرةً

أنّ الغمام يَصُوبُ الأرضَ بالمطرِ

أنّ الغمام يَصُوبُ الأرضَ بالمطرِ

Do you not see the wind's movements announcing

Do you not see the movements of the wind foretelling

That the clouds shower the earth with rain?

That the clouds are directing rain towards the earth?

فالجوّ ملتحِف بُسْطاً مفوَّفةً

فالجوّ ملتحِف بُسْطاً مفوَّفةً

كأنهن اختلافُ الوشي والحَبَر

كأنهن اختلافُ الوشي والحَبَر

So the sky is wrapped in striped carpets,

The atmosphere is wrapped in outspread brocade

As though they were the varied patterns of brocade and striped cloth.

As if it were the diversity of black and white.

كأنّ بردَ نسيم الغَيْم حين بدا

كأنّ بردَ نسيم الغَيْم حين بدا

ارتشافِ حبيبٍ زار في السَّحَرِ

ارتشافِ حبيبٍ زار في السَّحَرِ

As though the coolness of the cloud-breeze, when it appeared,

It was as though when the cool breeze of the clouds appeared,

Were a sip from a beloved who visited before dawn.

It was a loved one visiting in the early dawn.

فأجرِ فيه كؤوسَ اللَّهو دائرةً

فأجرِ فيه كؤوسَ اللَّهو دائرةً

بين ارتجاع حنين الناي والوَتَرِ

بين ارتجاع حنين الناي والوَتَرِ

So let the cups of revelry go round in it,

So pass around the cups of revelry

Amid the echoing plaint of flute and string.

Between the melodies of the flute and strings.

واعلمْ بأنّ الليالي غيرُ باقيةٍ

واعلمْ بأنّ الليالي غيرُ باقيةٍ

فلا تُبَقِّ على لهوٍ ولا تَذَرِ

فلا تُبَقِّ على لهوٍ ولا تَذَرِ

And know that the nights do not endure;

And know that the nights are not lasting,

So leave no pleasure untouched, and leave none behind.

So do not persist in diversion or abandonment.
