لاdo not تضِقlose patience بالدهرwith Time ذَرعاin endurance
لا تضِق بالدهر ذَرعا
واقتلand kill الدهرTime جِهارَاopenly
واقتل الدهر جِهارَا
Do not lose patience with Time,
Do not be weary of time,
and kill Time openly
Slay time openly,
بمُدامwith wine تقتلthat kills الهمْbeginning of 'sorrow'
بمُدام تقتل الهمْ
مَcompletion of 'sorrow' غُبوقاas an evening draught وابتكاراand early-morning drinking
مَ غُبوقا وابتكارا
with wine that kills sorrow,
With wine slay cares
at dusk and at dawn.
While happy and inventive.
ودعِand leave alone الدهرَTime وإنand even if خاbeginning of 'betrays'
ودعِ الدهرَ وإن خا
نcompletion of 'betrays' مُثِيراstirring up ماwhatever أثاراit stirred up
ن مُثِيرا ما أثارا
And leave Time be, even if it betrays,
Leave time be, though it rouse
stirring up whatever it stirs.
What it stirred up.
إنindeed أسفbaser (apparently أَسَفّ) منthan أنto
إن أسف من أن
تقتنيyou acquire منهfrom it حِذاراfear
تقتني منه حِذارا
Indeed, it is too base
Regret not what
for you to harbor fear of it.
You guarded against it
لمnot (past negation) نجِدwe find مماfrom what قضىdecreed اللbeginning of 'God'
لم نجِد مما قضى الل
هُcompletion of 'God' منconcerning الأمرthe affairs فِراراescape
هُ من الأمر فِرارا
We have found, from what God has decreed
We find no fleeing what
concerning affairs, no escape.
God has decreed.
فاسقِنيso give me to drink صِرْفاًunmixed wine وغَنِّand sing
فاسقِني صِرْفاً وغَنِّ
داوِcure بالخمرwith wine الخُمَاراthe hangover
داوِ بالخمر الخُمَارا
So pour me unmixed wine, and sing:
Give me pure wine, and sing to me
cure the hangover with wine.
With limpid ruby wine.
