مُرَدَّدَةًrepeated كادتalmost لهاbecause of it النفسُthe soul تُزْهَقُbe taken away
Amid sweet basil and wine, I remembered you,
again and again, till my soul nearly departed.
فلماand when تناولنthey took up الغِناءَsinging شوادِياas songstresses
وأَتْبَعَand followed مَزْموماًa restrained one منof الضَّرْبِthe rhythm مُطْلَقُa free one
And when the songstresses took up their singing,
and a free rhythm followed a restrained one,
تَتَبَّعتِfollowed العينانِthe two eyes شَخْصَكِyour figure فِيهمamong them

my eyes followed your figure among them;
when it grew distant, my tears kept welling.
إلىto اللهGod أشكوI lament فَقْدَهاlosing her مِثْلَjust like ماthat (clause marker) شَكاhe lamented
إلىto اللهGod فَقْدَthe lack of الماءِwater عَطْشانُa thirsty man مُوثَقُbound
To God I lament her loss, just as
a thirsty man in bonds lamented his lack of water to God.

It is as though my heart, since death bore her away,
were a wing whose parts have weakened, and so it flutters.
