عاتبْ حَبِيبَك مُعْلناً أو مُخْفياً

عاتبْ حَبِيبَك مُعْلناً أو مُخْفياً

واجعل عِتابَك كُلّه استِعطافا

Reproach your beloved, openly or in secret,

and make all your reproach a plea for affection.

واصبر له وإن استمرّ قطيعةً

واصبر له وإن استمرّ قطيعةً

فلعلّه يَستحدِث الإنصافا

فلعلّه يَستحدِث الإنصافا

And be patient with him, even if he persists in estrangement,

for perhaps he will begin to show fairness.

لا يَعْذُبُ الحبّ الأليمُ عذابه

لا يَعْذُبُ الحبّ الأليمُ عذابه

إلا إذا صدّ الحبيب وجافى

إلا إذا صدّ الحبيب وجافى

Love, whose torment is painful, is not sweet

unless the beloved turns away and shuns you.
