ألستare you not ترىseeing سحابthe cloud of اللَّهوrevelry يَهْمِيpouring down
علىupon اللَّذّاتthe pleasures أمطارَshowers of السرورِjoy
Do you not see the clouds of revelry pouring down
Do you not see the cloud of revelry pouring
rains of gladness upon every delight?
Showers of joy upon delights?
وَرجُعand the echo of الزَّمْرthe piping يشكوlaments ماwhat أُلاقيI endure
إلىto الأوتارthe strings منfrom ألمthe pain of الزفيرsighing
The echo of the pipes laments what I suffer,
And the echo of the pipes laments what I endure
telling the strings of the pain in my sighs.
To the strings—the agony of sighing.
وصوتُand the sound of الطبلthe drum بينهماbetween the two of them يناديcalls out
ألاcome now هُبُّواrise, all of you إلىto شربdrinking الكبيرthe great one
And the drum’s voice, between the two, calls out:
And the drum’s voice between them calls:
“Come, rise and drink the aged wine!”
Come, rise to drink the great one!

بظاهرthrough the outward aspect of حسنهاits beauty همُّthe cares of الصدورthe breasts (hearts)
What a spectacle! At the sight of its beauty,
Oh, what a sight! Made manifest
the care within all hearts clears away.
Through its outward beauty are the cares of hearts.
ولولاand were it not أنthat فيin الشررthe sparks انتقاضاًa crackling
لقلتI would have said كأنهas though it were وَهَجُthe glow of الضميرthe inner heart
Were it not for the sparks’ fitful flickering,
And were there no crackling in the sparks,
I would say it was the blaze within the soul.
I would have said: it is like the inner heart’s glow.
