This is the gazelle who shoots with his eye,

caring nothing whom he has slain among the peoples.

He shot; the arrow of his eye did not miss my heart—

that kohl-dark eye, with its languor and sickness.

How, then, can he deny killing me, or call me a liar

about it, when his palm is dyed with my blood?

By God, seek no vengeance for it: it is a gift

from me, for those dusky lips, that sidelong glance, and those slender, twiglike fingers.
