مِثْلَlike ماwhat قدalready شَرِبتُI drank مِنْfrom مقُلَتَيْهhis two eyes
مِثْلَ ما قد شَرِبتُ مِنْ مقُلَتَيْه
May my father ransom him from whose palms I drank,
just as I had drunk from his eyes.

And as we embraced, his front teeth poured me
the nectar of choice wine from his lips.

Whenever he gave me another draught from his teeth, he greeted
me with anemone blossoms from his cheeks,

and with the twin pomegranates of a silver bough,
in which rose the likeness of his two buttocks.

تِمِّ لولا ظلامُ سالفتَيْهِ
So he is like a sand dune, like a bough, like the moon at
its full—but for the darkness of his sidelocks.

The tunics were too tight to encompass his buttocks
and his breasts, and so they split upon him.

O you who ignorantly reproach me for him, do you find
love’s justice toward his two moons beautiful?

How can I forget him, when my eye and my heart
are the two guides of my passion and my longing toward him?
