Perhaps you will consider the plight of one

whose reins you hold as one holds a bridle.

And how have you mastered one too exalted

to be deemed king of creation and time?

I bear witness that love's rebuff is sharper

and pierces hearts more deeply than a spearhead.

Is it because your eyelids grew languid, and there coiled

upon the apples of your face two scorpions,

and you shone as the first gleam of dawn shines,

and swayed as a branch of the bān tree sways,

and musk wafted from your fragrance, until

the horizon seemed a garden of saffron?

And grant that you unveiled a face as fair as dawn—

how, then, did you smile to reveal teeth like daisies?

And how did you bear your hips, a dune of sand,

upon a foot more delicate than a tongue?

So, O you in whom beauty dwells, so that

eloquence's subtlest art falls short of it,

you have denied my eye sleep; so allow

my heart to visit you through wishes.

And my blood was on your cheek, unconcealed—

so behold it upon your cheek and fingertips.
