I did not forsake wine, roses, and the full moon

willingly, but in humiliation and against my will.

She barred me from all three; even if

she killed me, by God, I would not reveal who she is.

She said, “Roses, wine, and the full moon

are my sweet saliva, my cheek’s color, and my face.”

I said, “So stingy with everything!” She replied,

“No, but I was stingy with myself and my likeness.”

I said, “Oh, if only I were your likeness!” She said,

“Only wishful longing kills the lover.”
