والبين صعْب على الأحباب موقِعُه
She said, when parting's sharpest pain had struck her—
and parting's impact is hard upon lovers—
اِجعلْplace يديكyour two hands علىupon قلبيmy heart فقدfor indeed ضَعُفَتْgrew weak
اِجعلْ يديك على قلبي فقد ضَعُفَتْ

“Place your hands upon my heart, for too weak have grown
its strength and ribs to bear what lies within.

مَنْthe one who شتَّscattered شملَthe unity of الهوىlove بالوصلِthrough reunion يجمعهwill reunite it
مَنْ شتَّ شملَ الهوى بالوصلِ يجمعه
And turn the mounts toward me awhile; perhaps
he who sundered love's union will restore it through reunion.”

غريقُ بَحْرٍ يَرَى الشاطي ويُمْنَعُه
On the day she turned away, in grief and sorrow I was like
a drowning man at sea who sees the shore but is denied it.
