I have borne witness that the beloved’s abandonment is doom,

And that lovers’ yearning is an adornment.

I am afflicted with one beside whom the sun seems a falsehood,

And a lie, when you behold his radiant brow.

He has the upright stature of a bough,

And a desert gazelle’s neck and eye.

As though the two veils of his cheeks were gold,

With silver melted around its redness.

So, O you whose union is abandonment and rejection,

And whose utmost nearness is distance and separation:

You shed my blood, though you have no right to it

With which to assail me; nor does it owe a debt.

As though, in shedding it, you were Yazid,

Who acted unjustly—and as though I were my forefather al-Husayn.
