لا نالك السقَم المحذورُ إن وردا

وعِشْتَ فينا عزيزاً سالما أبدَا

May the dreaded sickness never touch you, should it come,

and may you live among us forever, honored and unharmed.

اللهُ يعلمُ أني مذْ سمعتُ بما

اللهُ يعلمُ أني مذْ سمعتُ بما

دهاك عاود قلبي الشجوَ والكمدا

دهاك عاود قلبي الشجوَ والكمدا

God knows that ever since I heard of what

befell you, my heart has returned to grief and anguish.

يا ليت ما يعتريه بي فأُنقِذَه

يا ليت ما يعتريه بي فأُنقِذَه

أو ليتني واجِدٌ كلَّ الذي وَجَدا

أو ليتني واجِدٌ كلَّ الذي وَجَدا

Oh, would that what afflicts him fell on me, so I might save him,

or would that I suffered all that he has suffered.

أو ليت كلَّ سرور يستبِدّ به

أو ليت كلَّ سرور يستبِدّ به

دوني وأغْدُو له مما يَهُمُّ فِدا

دوني وأغْدُو له مما يَهُمُّ فِدا

Or would that every joy were his alone,

not mine, and that I might become his ransom against whatever troubles him.

أمّا الزمانُ فلا يعلوك حادثه

أمّا الزمانُ فلا يعلوك حادثه

قد ظلَّ يسعى بما ترضاه مجتهِدا

قد ظلَّ يسعى بما ترضاه مجتهِدا

As for Time, no calamity of its shall overcome you;

it has kept striving diligently for what pleases you.

ألَنْتَ ما لم يَزْل صَعْبَ القِياد كما

ألَنْتَ ما لم يَزْل صَعْبَ القِياد كما

حَلَلْتَ من صَرْف هذا الدهر ما انعقدا

حَلَلْتَ من صَرْف هذا الدهر ما انعقدا

You have made pliant what was always hard to rein, just as

you have untied what was knotted in this age's turns of fortune.

فكيف أخشى عليك الحادثاتِ وقد

فكيف أخشى عليك الحادثاتِ وقد

ملكت من حادثات الدهر كلَّ مَدى

ملكت من حادثات الدهر كلَّ مَدى

So how could I fear calamities for you, when

you have mastered the full range of Time's misfortunes?

سأستقيد بك الدنيا التي امتنعتْ

سأستقيد بك الدنيا التي امتنعتْ

منّى وألبسُ أثواب العلا جُدُدا

منّى وألبسُ أثواب العلا جُدُدا

Through you I shall subdue the world that has resisted

me, and don new robes of glory.

الله ملَّكك الدنيا وساكنَها

الله ملَّكك الدنيا وساكنَها

والله أعطاك ما لم يعطه أحدا

والله أعطاك ما لم يعطه أحدا

God has made you master of the world and all who dwell in it,

and God has given you what He has given no one else.

والله جارُك ممَّا أنت تحذره

والله جارُك ممَّا أنت تحذره

ومصطفِيك ومعطِيك الذي وعدا

ومصطفِيك ومعطِيك الذي وعدا

And God is your protector against whatever you fear,

and He who chose you and grants you what He promised.

صلَّى عليك إلهُ الخلق مِن مَلِكٍ

صلَّى عليك إلهُ الخلق مِن مَلِكٍ

لولاه ما طاب لي عيش ولا بَردَا

لولاه ما طاب لي عيش ولا بَردَا

May the God of creation bless you—a king

without whom life would be neither sweet nor cool for me.
