People before us fought their enemies

when they were mighty, worthy equals.

Do you deem us abject? It would be base

    of us to fight cowards.

Do foxes seek out the lion, or does

the earth aspire to reach the sky?

No, by Him who made the Imams, from the line

of the Prophet’s legatee, my forefathers!

I have borne no humiliation, but have been patient

until my Lord fulfills the decree.

So you two, turn war away from the ignoble foes,

and leave me to battle the tawny wine.

A wine that vanquishes cares whenever

you battle it, and enraptures drinking companions.

    أو رمتْها العيونُ لاحت ضياء

    If noses summon it, it breathes perfume;

or if eyes cast their gaze upon it, it gleams with light.

So it is like the rose in redness and fragrance,

and it is like the lion in daring and combat.
