وقدand already قُطِعْتhave been severed ممنto those whom تُحِبُّyou love الوسائلthe ties
وقد قُطِعْت ممن تُحِبُّ الوسائل
Can you be patient when this herald of parting arrives,
Be patient, for this separation is but transient
And the ties to those you love have been severed?
Though access to the beloved is now denied

So, would that I knew what you will do
If only I knew what you will do, my friend
When Salma departs, and what you will say.
When the caravan departs leaving Selma behind

And your body, even if they do not leave you, is wasted;
Your body, if left unharmed, will survive the pain
And your heart, if they part, departs with the caravan.
But your heart, if it goes with them, cannot remain

You will remember a verse spoken by one full of longing,
You’ll recall the verse of youth and passion
Whose joints drank their fill of the water of love.
Watered by the spring of love within each vein

وسارواand they journey بليلَىwith Layla أَنَّthat عقلكyour reason زائلvanishing
وساروا بليلَى أَنَّ عقلك زائل
You will know, if separation's exile takes them far away,
When estranged, you will know if they depart
And they journey with Layla, that your reason will be gone.
With Layla, that your mind has come apart
