Do not trust jealous Time, even if it grows serene,

At peace with you after battle and feigning forbearance.

    وأحذر تقلبه وإن هوَ أبرَما

    And when it brings you good fortune, humor it;

And beware its reversals, even when it binds things fast.

And when a setback from Time befalls you,

Then meet it clothed in praiseworthy, most noble character.

And when you gain power over your enemy, spare him,

As one would who judges pardon the wiser course.

And raise up your weak one, lest his weakness recoil upon you

One day, when changing fortunes find him grown strong,

So he breaks your bone as you once broke him,

And you go on provoking him without bringing him low.
