And when I saw that God had urged thanksgiving

and granted abundant reward for it,

and said, “Thank Me, O My servants, and I shall give you more,”

I thanked the Commander of the Faithful for his kindness to me.

O Imam of guidance, how many lavish favors you have bestowed

on me, and grants of nearness by which you raised my rank!

You have never ceased, in your generosity, to bestow kindness on me

and safeguard me in ways I know and ways I do not.

You graciously put me at ease and raise my seat of honor,

confound my enviers, and deal graciously with my affairs.

Through you I attained my hopes, my desire, and my wishes,

and gained the victory I had hoped for.

But for you, I would not have found calamities bowing

before me, nor won safe-conduct from Time.

Nor would my fortunes have flourished, nor my ambition soared,

nor my hopes risen high, nor my breast opened wide.

I shall proclaim the favors you have bestowed on me

in praise, as gardens praise the rain.

If I do not continually join my thanks to your bounty,

then may my ears be forever bound to deafness.

I swear an oath in which my inward belief matches my outward bearing,

and in which my words and my secret thoughts do not differ.

My hearing and my sight have indeed led me to you,

and neither my heart nor my thought has held back from you.

I cherished your love for me in the very core of my resolve,

and in my heart, my inmost parts, my skin, and my hair.

Are you anything but rain pouring forth its bounty,

spreading it across the horizons, over land and sea?

You surpassed mankind in prudence, resolve, and aspiration,

as the daytime sun surpasses the full moon.

You exacted vengeance for the realm from every usurper,

and strengthened the pillars of loyalty against treachery.

For you are the beacon by whose light people see,

and you are the Imam chosen from those in authority.

The days have acknowledged your valor and bounty,

and all kings have yielded their claims to glory to you.

The world has entrusted its affairs to you,

so the edge of your resolve has never glanced off any of its tasks.

Time has found in you a vigilant, resolute man,

who, when Time wounds him with despair, heals the wound with patience,

whose savor is sweeter than clarified honey,

and who is keener than solid, straightened, dusky spears,

a mighty man whose sword exalted faith and kingship

and freed the children of hope from captivity.

I thanked you in the month in which every fasting person

seeks greater reward through loving you.

I affirmed my secret love for you by proclaiming it; indeed,

the finest love is a secret confirmed aloud.

May you always greet the fast with the same measure

of sincerity, goodness, and purity that it has held.

May whoever is loyal to you ever enjoy every blessing,

and whoever opposes you remain in loss as long as he lives.

God's peace be upon you as long as morning shines aloft,

and as long as dawn's bright brow unveils its light.
