By God, had there not been in my tears, the day they departed,

a talebearer against me, I would have wiped away tears of blood.

I hid my love for you from every limb

of mine, so none complained of suffering and sickness.

Then I entrusted your secret to my heart,

and with that secret, it was like one who forgot all he knew.

O mistress of the red canopy, come to my aid!

If you kill me, you have killed generosity and nobility.

Be generous, if only with a greeting from you, accompanied

by kohl from your glance, or your palm’s red ʿanam twigs.

Has a bough girded itself with a sand dune within your robes, or

has the full moon donned a turban of darkness within your fastenings?

Would that I knew when my heart fell madly in love with her!

And a lover has wishes whenever he is wronged.

When shall I kiss that rose in full bloom,

and pluck that string of pearls, so perfectly arrayed,

and good fortune gather us beneath its cloak—

a fierce lion and a gazelle, full-grown and bashful—

in an embrace whose slightest touch would melt ruby stones,

until you saw them streaming over her upper breast,

and in a frolic that rumpled the bedding and scattered

necklaces amid it, leaving the anklet split apart?

For I have, on every part of her naked body,

a mark that shows it has been kissed.

As though her temples had sweated jet,

and the kohl at her eye-corners melted as they pressed together,

so it became musk on her cheek, and at her mouth

a gleaming dark hue, and on her upper breast, charcoal.
