ألاAh! أيّهاO you الطيرُbird الموافيarriving
لقدindeed أطلقتَyou granted منfrom فكريmy thoughts سَراحيmy release
O bird that has come,
O bird circling above
You have indeed set me free from my thoughts.
You have released my thoughts to roam free
تذكّرتI recalled الزمانthe past وماand what دهانيbefell me
بهin it منof حادثcalamity القَدَرfate المُتاحallotted
I recalled the past and what befell me
I remembered times and what has afflicted me
In it—the calamity that fate had allotted.
Of the occurrences of accessible fate
فلماand when غابbecame lost فيin التِّذْكارrecollection فهميmy understanding
وحسّيand my senses حيثwhere تَصْفِقyou flap بالجَناحِwith the wing
And when my mind was lost in recollection,
So when my understanding was absent in recollection
And my senses too, where you beat your wing,
And my senses where you clap with your wings
فطيِّرthen dispelled حسّthe rustle ريشكof your feathers سُكْرِthe drunkenness حِسّيof my senses
كنَوْمانٍlike a sleeper يُنَبَّهis awakened بالصِّياحby cries
Then your feathers’ rustle dispelled my senses’ drunkenness,
Then make your feathers fly, intoxicated by my senses
Like a sleeper awakened by cries.
Like slumber being awakened by shouts
تَروحyou pass the evening بروضةin a meadow أنفُungrazed وتَضْحيand you pass the morning
وإلفُكand your mate حاضرٌpresent وهواكand your passion صاحيsober
You pass evening and morning in an ungrazed meadow,
You wander the meadow of my breath and become sacrificed
With your mate present and your passion sober.
While your company is present and your love is awake
ولوand if لاقيتَyou faced ماwhat ألقىI face لضاقتْwould become too narrow
عليكfor you مَوارِدُwatering places البِيدthe deserts الفِساحِvast
And were you to face what I face, too narrow would be
And if you met what I met, the springs
For you the watering places of the vast deserts.
Of abundant ruin would have narrowed upon you
لعلّperhaps اللهGod يَفْرِجwill relieve ماwhat ألاقيI endure
ويأخذand exacts redress للمِراضfor the sick منfrom الصِّحاحthe healthy
Perhaps God will ease what I endure,
Perhaps God may relieve what I meet
And exact redress for the sick from the healthy.
And take from wellness for the sick
