When I brandished the sword, then girded it on

alongside a slender spear, more wasted than a spurned lover,

she reproached me, saying: “Why have you unjustly imitated

my glance and my figure? This is paltry and avails nothing.

Suppose you forged the sword from my eye’s glance,

and suppose you cut the slender spear from my figure—

does the spear have a rump like mine to adorn it,

making it resemble me, or bear the two pomegranates of my bosom?

And has the sword a sheath like my eyelid, which draws it

and sheathes it in the heart of every stalwart youth?”
