Through you the days grew lovely, until I imagined them

Pearls that shone upon the upper breast of a nubile maiden.

So through you, misfortunes came to miss their mark,

    And hopes returned without disappointment.

Your forbearance journeys by night to sins, and they are erased,

And your generosity spends the night seeking the seeker.

He made passion his inescapable lot,

And longing, on the day of parting, the mightiest conqueror.

So his eyelids are amid a raincloud of his tears,

And his heart is amid a fiercely blazing fire.

How little their pale camels would have mattered on the day of departure,

Had they not journeyed with howdahs and nubile maidens.

They are supple boughs, though they do not sprout,

And suns on an overcast day, never setting.

Had their beauty not been marred by a reprover,

Who scolds, and a spiteful tale-bearer and a watcher,

The sand dunes would not have borne slender boughs, nor

Would full moons have gleamed beneath robes.

    They have gone, but haunting longing does not go;

No, no; nor is far-off patience returning.
