O one who has gathered excellence and attained glory,

And eclipsed the sun and outshone the full moon,

Though I have taxed my thoughts in your praise,

Until I perfected their meter and prose,

I still deem poetry too slight for your eminence.

O one who, whenever he gives, surpasses the rain,

And follows his favors with apologies,

And lavishes wealth and purchases gratitude.

    وكيف يحكي المستطابُ المُرَّا

    I fall short if I think your bounty is the sea;

And how can the sweet resemble the bitter?

    Indeed, al-Muʿizz, the radiant king,

Has left no one free through the bounty he bestows.

    وإن غدا أسنى وأعلى قَدْرا

    He has mastered mankind and time alike;

And indeed he has grown loftier and higher in worth,

If he rules the world or this age.

How often he has towered above the shining stars in glory,

And shattered the brown lances with his judgment,

And turned generosity into gifts given one after another,

Until he banished destitution and dispelled poverty.

If he shook hands with a rock, he would soften the rock.

Were it not for him, we would not have known bounty and goodness,

Nor seen generosity openly among us.

Lavishing his bounty brings him joy,

Nor does he regard doing good as anything arduous.

Generous in character, beaming throughout his life,

The broadest-hearted of all who walk upon the earth,

He dons piety as armor and fulfills his vows.

O God, I have fallen short in his praise—forgive me.
