And when they roused the mature camels late at night and headed for al-Sham,

And a camel-driver urged onward the moons of the howdahs,

And grief barred weeping, so our tears

Were exhausted by parting, and sorrow was plain,

They drew the silken wraps away from haunches

Full and well-watered, yet their waists were parched.

So my eye did not defy the sway of tears,

Nor did my heart find shelter behind my ribs.

Truly, every night I never cease

To be frightened by parting or wander distraught in a valley.

So, if only time, which carried off good fortune and turned

Against wealth, had consoled me with those I love.
