And one whose dusky lips are adored, whose eyelids are languid,

Ever false in promise, infirm in oath,

Languid of gaze, effeminate in nature,

He almost melts from luxury and softness.

As though his glances were my resolve's deadly assaults,

And his beauty's soundness the confirmation of my faith.

He came to me, the night's fabric pitch-black,

As though its stars were blue eyes.

Then, when he crowned his left hand with a cup,

And the wine-measure became an earring for his right hand,

He gave me wine resembling his cheeks,

That softens the breast of the stubborn gazelle.

As though the wine were a pomegranate blossom,

Appearing in a sheer robe of jasmine.
