وأتْهَمنِيand he accused me مولايَmy lord أنِّيthat I اتَّهمتُهaccused him
بِغَدْرٍof treachery وماذاand why? يُتْهمis accused العرفkindness بالنُكْرِof evil
And my lord accused me of having accused him
My master accused me of betrayal, yet how can familiarity be accused of estrangement?
Of treachery—and why should kindness be accused of evil?
So I wore the garb of miserliness in his benevolence, and withheld gratitude from my benefactor.
إذاًin that case فلبِستُso I would have donned البخلَmiserliness لُبْسَthe donning of محسِّنٍone who beautifies
لهfor it ومَنَعتand I withheld المنعِمِينthe benefactors منfrom الشكرِgratitude
Then I would have donned miserliness, lending beauty
I harbored no grudge except that his aloofness pained me. Who would doubt the full moon?
To it, and withheld gratitude from benefactors.
Can the sun be accused of suspicions that she secretly met a lover in secrecy and cover?
وماand not ارتبتُI doubted منهabout him غيرexcept أنّthat صدودَهhis turning away
شجانيgrieved me ومنand who يرتابُhas doubts بالقمرِabout the moon البدرِthe full moon
And I never doubted him; only his turning away
So do not accuse me of accusing you unjustly. I reproach you only for abandonment.
Grieved me—and who would doubt the full moon?
You are far above any stray thoughts of mine. Could I ever cast off your clarity from my heart?
وهلand could? تُتْهِمaccuse الشمسَthe sun الظُنُونُsuspicions بأنهاthat it
سَرَتْtraveled by night لمحبٍّto a lover فيin خفاءsecrecy وفيand in سِترِconcealment
And could suspicions accuse the sun of having
How could I form an idea to guide me when you have emptied my heart of all thought?
Journeyed by night to a lover, in secrecy and concealment?
You still fill my heart, my sight, the air, the earth, the horizon and all time.
فلاso do not تتهِمْنيaccuse me باتِّهامِكof accusing you ظالماًunjustly
فإنّيfor I لمdid not أَعْتِبكreproach you إلاexcept علىfor الهجرِestrangement
So do not unjustly accuse me of accusing you;
Please accept me, so your acceptance may extinguish what your persona has set alight in my heart.
For I reproached you only for forsaking me.
I have seen no honor like the honor of one reconciled, no humiliation like one excused.
فحاشاكso far be it from you منfrom أنthat تعتريكassail you خواطريmy thoughts
بظنٍّwith suspicion وهلand would? ألقِيI cast out صفاءكyour purity مِنfrom صدريmy breast
So far be it from you to be assailed by my thoughts
If I appear insignificant beside your lofty stature, your lack of pride is your greatest asset to me.
With suspicion; would I cast your purity from my breast?
فكيفso how? وماليand I have no فكرةٌa thought أَهتدِيI find my way بهاby it
لأنكbecause you قدalready أَخْلَيْتyou emptied قلبِيmy heart منof الفكرِthought
How could I, when I have no thought to guide me,
Since you have emptied my heart of thought?
وماand not زلتَyou have ceased عنديto me مِلْءَthe fullness of قلبيmy heart وناظريand my eye
ومِلءَand the fullness of الحشاthe breast والأرضِand the earth والأُفْقِand the horizon والدّهرِand time
And to me you still fill my heart and my eye,
And fill my breast, the earth, the horizon, and all time.
فجُدْso give generously بقبولٍwith acceptance منكfrom you يُطْفِئُextinguishes برْدُهits coolness
عنfrom القلبthe heart ماwhat أصلاهscorched it شخصكyour person منof جمرembers
So grant your acceptance, whose coolness quenches
The embers with which your person has scorched the heart.
فلمso did not أرI see عِزّاًdignity مثلlike عِزَّةِthe dignity of صافحone who pardons
ولمand did not أرI see ذُلاّabasement مثلَlike ذِلَّةِthe abasement of ذِيone possessing عُذْرِan excuse
For I have seen no dignity like that of one who pardons,
And no abasement like that of one with an excuse.
فإنso if يكُthere be ليfor me عنcompared with عُظْمِthe greatness of شأنِكyour station قِلةsmallness
فأَنْفَعُthen the most beneficial شيءٍthing فيكwith regard to you ليfor me قِلَّةُa lack of الكِبْرِpride
So if I am small beside the greatness of your station,
Then what serves me best with you is a lack of pride.
