وجَرَّبْتُand I tried هذاthis الدهرَage حتىuntil عرفتُهI knew it
فأنْجىso safest منهfrom it اللَّبيبُthe discerning man المُجرّبthe seasoned
And I have tried this age until I came to know it;
I have experienced time till I understood it
so the discerning, seasoned man is safest from it.
So the experienced wise escapes from it
سَلِask الحربَwar عنّيabout me حينwhen يُخْشىis feared اصطلاؤهاfacing its flames
ألستُam I not أُجيبI answer الصارخينthose crying for help فأُرْكبُand then I mount up
Ask war about me when facing its flames is feared:
Ask war about me when its flames are feared
do I not answer those crying for help and then mount up?
Don't I respond to callers to mount it?
وسَلْand ask بالنَّدىabout generosity هلwhether غيرُother than كفّيmy palm سَحابهاits clouds
وسَلْand ask بالمعاليabout noble deeds هلwhether سوايَanyone but me لهاfor them أَبُa father
And ask about generosity: are its clouds anything but my palm?
Ask the dew, does any but my palm form its clouds?
And ask about noble deeds: is anyone but me their father?
Ask the heights, is there anyone but me who aspires them?
