And a place of tender growth, lovely in outline,

It turned even the hilltops green.

Every morning cloud of autumn rain poured generously upon it,

Its downpour cascading, its rain streaming,

Until its lowlands became like the sea,

So they brim over, pelted with foam,

When it appeared upon their vast sea,

And inscribed itself there like the mīms of my name—

The east wind, with its pitch-black cloud-cover—

It fashioned for it a sleeveless coat of mail.

As though its storm-blast came from my resolve,

Until, when it became like my forbearance,

And every pitch-dark mass lifted from it,

    Of the lowering, rain-streaming clouds,

It met the stars with their likeness.

There I drank with every gallant lord,

With kissed cheeks and subtle understanding,

All of them my brothers and paternal cousins,

Of the lineage of the sons of al-Batūl, my mother,

The Alids, sweet to the taste,

    And the noble, slender-waisted Hashimites,

    Each well-born, noble, and proud,

Shunning baseness as he shuns sin.

And one with a languid gaze, without sickness,

Charming in pride, sweet in tyranny,

His judgment obeyed, in justice or injustice,

He parts his lips to show teeth white as snow,

As though they were strung pearl beads,

Sweet the harvest of his saliva, delicious his kisses.

He cured my sorrow's sickness by pressing wine upon me,

Until I reclined without knowing it,

Drunk—and in intoxication lies every gain,

After separation and nights of estrangement.

Oh, my wonder at the visiting phantom!

It stirred real heartache from my dream,

Until, indeed, my concealment could not hold my secret,

And my patience turned gray as my grief grew young.

And a soft-feathered bird, light of flesh,

Mute, among eloquent yet wordless birds,

Swifter than the raincloud when it pours,

A pigeon noble on both mother's and father's sides,

It passes through the air like an arrow,

Or like a lightning flash as the rain pours,

Or an eye's glance, not yet complete.

In spreading and folding its wings, it almost

Separates its flesh from its bones.

Until, when it passes beyond the stars' station,

And becomes like an illusion on the horizon,

It plunges like stars hurled as missiles,

As though firmly roused to action.

Tell the sons of barren women mounted from behind:

    Indeed, I am the asp that spits venom;

By God, no one will enjoy wronging me.
