لَهْفِيmy anguish علىfor مَنthe one who أقمتI upheld عُذْرَهْhis excuse
فيin الهجرestrangement لمّاwhen أطالhe prolonged هَجرَهْhis desertion
Alas for the one whose excuse I upheld
for forsaking me, when he prolonged his desertion.
أَذابَنِيhe melted me فاقتصْصتُso I took revenge منهon him
بأنْby the fact that أذابmelted اللثامkissing ثَغْرَهhis mouth
He melted me, so I took my revenge on him
through kisses that melted his mouth.
فلوso if ترىyou see ضِحْكَهhis laughter ودَمْعيand my tears
وذِلّتيand my abasement فيin الهوىlove وكِبْرَهْand his pride
If you could see his laughter and my tears,
and my abasement in love and his pride,
رأيتَyou would see مستصحبَينtwo companions راحَاthey both went forth
وحُزْنand the sorrow هذاof this one لذاto the other مَسَرَّهa joy
you would see two companions going their way,
with one's sorrow a joy to the other.
لوif سكنdwelt الأُفْقَthe horizon مَنْthe one who جفانيshunned me
لخِلْتَهُI would deem him شمسَهits sun وبدرَهْand its full moon
If the one who shunned me dwelt on the horizon,
I would deem him its sun and its full moon.
