Ah, many a night with fragrant sleeves,

from the breezes of narcissus and lilies,

    as though its low-hanging stars

were a meadow of daisies in its sky.

There my cupbearer spent the night as my drinking companion,

and the sweetness of her scent was my basil.

Until, when the hand of darkness stretched out,

and the sky wrapped itself in a shawl,

and the crescent resembled half a serpent,

she stood upright like a bān-tree bough,

    her headcloth and caftan showing,

in the guise of beardless boys:

    roguish, with a bewitching tongue.

    She disdained looking like women,

and dye upon palm and fingertips,

    and couched tall ashwood lances:

a brave man's garb, yet timid when confronted.

Until, when the two cups circulated,

and the third and second lute-strings rang out,

and songs urged the goblets onward,

and singing girls' melodies accompanied them,

and one tipsy drinker turned toward the other,

we spent the night as bedfellows in one place.

The drunken woman leaned upon the drunken man,

and the two mingled in embraces and nearness,

as the east wind entwines boughs with boughs.

Ah, what a drowsy woman and drowsy man!

Both were plied again with unmixed blood from the wine jars,

then lay down, two dead bodies at that hour,

and were enfolded in the roses' shrouds.

Had they been roused, they would have risen to tell

of the wonders of Paradise and its gardens.

And how often I outstripped dawn, unflagging,

    when Capricorn and Libra inclined,

while dawn resembled a wolf's tail,

with hounds frisking on their leashes,

    unerring of glance and eyelid,

bringing together in their headlong running

the tips of their claws and their ears.

    Their coats varied in color:

one brilliantly yellow, like pure gold,

and a piebald combining two colors,

and an alert one whose coat was pitch-black,

as though its foreleg were two:

    hollow-bellied, compact of body,

lofty of spirit, vigilant of heart,

as though among the teeth in its mouth

were every sharp, cutting Yemeni sword.

its two hind feet leave no mark on the soil,

as though it were stepping on flint.

It captures whatever can be seen,

as though it were the marvel of the age.

Then, when it reached the open field,

    ten gazelles appeared before it

among hills, dunes, and level plains.

It glided forth, seeking a possible opening,

    like lightning amid coiling serpents,

    quicker in movement and stopping

than accountants' fingers in the bureau,

as though it were a serpent's fierceness itself.

And two hunters released the two falcons,

which soared aloft, rising in the air.

these two swooped, and those two charged,

as two battalions meet in battle.

    Dust rose like smoke,

and cries reverberated with their ringing,

and the doom of gazelle and wild she-ass was at hand.

    stepping on four sturdy legs,

and its forelegs and hind legs were white,

and its face; then its two eyes were black.

sleek hair and a crimson hide,

as though the flames of fire were within it.

Nobly bred on both sides, frisking at the rein,

more solid in construction than a building,

as though its forelegs were two birds,

its drive bound to male ostriches,

and to oryx and wild she-asses in the lowlands,

as words are bound to meanings:

the steed of al-Aziz, the bountiful king,

Every charger is firm of limb,

O son of Muʿizz, exalter of religion and faith,

and son of the lofty kings descended from Adnan,

possessors of high rank and dominion,

and son of guidance, piety, and the Criterion:

how often, amid blows and spear-thrusts,

religion against the idols at Badr.

beyond even the vastness of minds to contain.
