ياO منyou who غَدَتْbecame لعُلاهُfor his exalted rank
يا من غَدَتْ لعُلاهُ
زُهْرُbright ones النّجومِthe stars مَطايَاmounts
زُهْرُ النّجومِ مَطايَا
O you, for whose exalted rank
O you whose glory
the bright stars have become mounts,
The stars' flowers were made horses
محلُّstanding قَدْرِكyour worth عِنْديin my estimation
محلُّ قَدْرِك عِنْدي
يجوزُsurpasses حَدَّthe limit of التَّحاياsalutations
يجوزُ حَدَّ التَّحايا
Your standing in my esteem
Your merit in my eyes
surpasses the bounds of salutations.
Transcends all praise
لكنّbut أَهلَpeople of المعاليnoble distinction
لكنّ أَهلَ المعالي
والظَّرْفِand refinement سَنُّواmade customary الهَداياgifts
والظَّرْفِ سَنُّوا الهَدايا
But those of noble distinction
Yet the eminent
and refinement have made gifts customary.
Gifted you presents
وقدand indeed بعثتُI have sent وِداديmy affection
وقد بعثتُ وِدادي
وأَبْرَمِيساًand abramis (a fish) ورَايَاand raya (a fish)
وأَبْرَمِيساً ورَايَا
And I have sent my affection,
I sent you my love
and abramis and raya fish.
As well as nightingales and gazelles
يلتذُّهrelishes it كلُّevery ذَوْقٍpalate
يلتذُّه كلُّ ذَوْقٍ
وتَصْطَفِيهand chooses it الحَواياthe entrails
وتَصْطَفِيه الحَوايا
Every palate relishes it,
To give joy to every taste
and the entrails favor it.
And be chosen by yearnings
لاnot (expressing a wish) زلتَyou cease تسموyou rise high وتَسْقيand you give to drink
لا زلتَ تسمو وتَسْقي
عِداكَyour foes كأسَthe cup of المنَاياdeaths
عِداكَ كأسَ المنَايا
May you ever rise high and give
You still ascend and toast
your foes the cup of death to drink.
Your enemies the cup of death
وسالمَتْكand may they be at peace with you الّلياليthe nights
وسالمَتْك الّليالي
وجانَبتْكand may they keep away from you الرَّزاياcalamities
وجانَبتْك الرَّزايا
May the nights be at peace with you,
The nights wished you safety
and calamities keep away from you.
And calamities avoided you
