I handed her wine, radiant like her cheeks,

undiluted, its radiance like the light of a torch.

Then I kissed her, and she said, laughing:

"And how do you give people people's cheeks to drink?

Did not my cheeks melt when you kissed them,

and yield red wine in the cup?

If I partook of my cheek, I would be taking

myself—and this, by my life, defies reason."

I said, "Drink: it is my tears, and its redness

is my blood; my breaths are what brew it in the cup."

She said, "If, for love of me, you have wept blood,

then give it to me to drink—upon my eyes and head!"

O night in which the full moon lay embracing me,

and the sun spent the night among my companions!

And I spent the night, content with her lips instead of my cup,

and with her cheeks instead of apples and myrtle.
