Every sword of death is a keen, cleaving blade,

when every blade has grown blunt.

And death has a summoner who, whenever he calls,

is relentless and honors no pledge to any creature.

To God belongs what her day bore away:

delicate grace and beauty of countenance.

She was the soul's contentment, the attainment of wishes,

the delight of life and the sweetness of wine,

the sweet basil of my hearing and the radiance of my eye,

and my heart's desire among all humankind.

How I grieve for her closeness, now lost,

a grief that brings illness to every limb.

How I grieve for those qualities which,

he said, were cleansed of every fault and blemish.

How I grieve—and too little is my grief—for one

for whom my consolation was nothing but care.

In my love for her I never knew what sorrow was,

nor tasted the pain of passion.

And every beloved has a fit of displeasure,

in which reproach and quarrelling drag on.

Yet she never made unfounded reproaches, once she was sure

that I was enamored of her, utterly lost in love.

Nor did pride ever urge her to

    display coquetry and voice reproach.

    Qualities sweet as honey,

and companionship like a garden after the rainclouds.

To musical rapture I announce the loss of her virtues,

and the delight of fellowship on a day with drinking companions.

To the oud and its strings I announce the loss of

that singing which surpassed the bounds of perfection.

To excellence I announce the loss of her excellence,

and her sweet singing, like the cooing of doves.

Ah, how lovely union with you, had it not ended,

and how lovely your nearness, had it endured.

You were my very liver, torn to pieces,

and my eye, gone, and my heart, distraught with love.

    فكيف لي عنكِ بدفعِ الحِمام

    And I had already warded the enemies away from her;

so how can I ward death away from you?

Had it been anything but death, it could not

have struck you past me with so grievous a calamity.
